Parliamentary recognition for Horizon Leisure’s community health and wellbeing programmes

Written by Abigael Wilson

Horizon Leisure welcomed The Rt Hon Suella Braverman MP for a tour of its Waterlooville Leisure Centre where she met with its wellbeing team to discuss the planned refurbishment and gain insight into the charitable organisation’s wide-ranging health and wellbeing programmes.

After securing funding in May 2024, Horizon Leisure and Havant Borough Council completed a public consultation on the Waterlooville refurbishment, which will include gym improvements and two outdoor padel courts. These are now in the planning stage with surveys and designs underway.

Mike Lyons, CEO, Horizon Leisure said: “We are really excited about the planned refurbishment and there is a lot of community excitement about the padel courts, so we were pleased to welcome our local MP, The Rt Hon Braverman, to find out more. Her visit showcased the value of community-led initiatives and the importance of partnerships between the public sector, local residents and grassroots organisations in promoting better public health.”

During her visit, Horizon Leisure highlighted its dementia-friendly sessions, activities designed to combat loneliness and social isolation, and specialist clubs for children and young people with additional needs. Horizon Leisure also recently launched Thrive, a young person’s activities and gym membership scheme aimed at 10-15-year-olds, funded school holiday programmes, a free creche, and expert-led parent and baby groups, with sessions hosted by GP and breastfeeding specialists.

The Rt Hon Suella Braverman MP said: “It was fantastic to visit Waterlooville Leisure Centre. My thanks go to the whole team who run a fantastic community asset. They go above and beyond supporting people to get fitter and more active. The work here is incredible, especially supporting people recovering from strokes and needing physio. There are so many great things going on here. Take this as your motivation to visit and join up.”

Lyons said: “Horizon Leisure is committed to inspiring healthier and happier communities. Physical activity extends beyond fitness; it improves learning, workplace productivity, mental wellbeing and social interaction. Our team is dedicated to supporting our community to move more every day, and to ensure the wellbeing benefits are accessible to everyone, regardless of their circumstances.”
